PlanetBuzz and Yelp are similar in some ways. Both sites have a business directory combined with elements of web 2.0 social media functionality. That’s about where the similarity ends.

PlanetBuzz has over 20 million business listings. Yelp appears to have far fewer businesses listed in their directory. Both offer free listings with upgrade opportunities for businesses. Yelp charges several hundred dollars a month for its full functionality…..PlanetBuzz charges just $199 a year!

Yelp has a team of ‘Yelpers’, most of whom appear to be high school or college age youngsters, creating content by writing lengthy reviews of restaurants that read like works of fiction. Case in point……..

“After an Uncle Mikey/Rat Pack sashay over at “Americana” I suggested we saunter over to Ozumo’s since the festivities appeared to be in a lull at Americana. It was packed so our group situated at an outside table for drinks whilst awaiting a table inside. The MatreD was extremely courteous and Uncle Mikey and Colo went back to Americana because UM left his credit card there. At our table they noted that the drinks they were having outside were not delivered to the table but our waiter graciously replaced them with fresh ones “on me. We ordered indiscriminately. Our waiter made some scrumptious suggestions which we went with, adding some rolls, sashimi, the black cod which is de rigeur, more drinks, it was a Kettle One and Soda night for me … “

These were just a few sentences we pulled from a typical Yelp review of… on average 4-5 paragraphs written by these young journalistic wanna be’s. Yelp appears to be largely a one sided dialogue of Yelpers with too much time on their hands engaging in creative writing for people who want to read paragraph upon paragraph of flowery prose. Far more sizzle than steak.
